10 fast coffee facts…

Now, we can’t give too much away just yet but the number 10 has a little bit of a special meaning to us leading into November. With that in mind, we thought we’d share 10 of our favourite fast facts about coffee so that when we share our BIG news next month, the number 10 means something to you too!

Coffee is the world’s second largest traded commodity, worth over $100 billion worldwide. First place went to crude oil, and you know, we can’t argue with that…

  1. Legend has it that we can thank a goat herder named Kaldi for the discovery of coffee way back in the 10th century.

  2. Every history acknowledges the important of coffee - in ancient Arab culture, a woman could only divorce her husband if he didn’t like her coffee.

  3. Consumed in great quantities (even after Monday morning), coffee is the most beloved beverage in the world, after water.

  4. The most expensive coffee in the world is “Kopi Luwak”. Made from beans digested from the Asian Palm Civet, it comes from Indonesia and sells for hundreds of dollars per kilo. Crazy!

  5. Coffee is actually a fruit. Coffee beans grow on a bush and are the pit of a berry, which makes them a fruit. Not sure it will pass with your doctor, but “an apple a day…” just got a whole new meaning!

  6. 78% of people who drink coffee, drink it to help wake themselves up

  7. Rumour has it that coffee can help you live longer too. A nutrition study followed 520,000 people for an average of 16 years across 10 European countries, with coffee-consuming men in that group 12 per cent, and women 7 per cent less likely to die early compared to people who avoided coffee completely.

  8. Used coffee ground make an excellent pest repellent – sprinkle the used coffee ground around your plants to help protect them against ants, snails and slugs.

  9. The word espresso comes from Italian and means “expressed” or “forced out”. Espresso is made by forcing very hot water under high pressure through finely ground, compacted coffee. Or liquid gold, as we like to call it.

    And funny enough…

  10. is also the number of coffees you will get when you purchase one of our prepaid cards, how many coffees it takes to get a FREE coffee with our VIP card and the amount of lattes over ice we need to make it through a standard Spring week.

So, scrap the high fives, it’s high tens all around as we prepare something a little fun in November… stay tuned!
